a BIG rant, with my angry voice

Harvest came and gone...so starts my rant .
After days and days of hard work. Her installation went up at the gallery.
We had a little party at the house to toast her and her art.Which by the way was spectacular to finally see..Meaning very eye catching and sweet (wink wink) to look at in all it's glory. I think those who saw it really enjoyed it and she got some good responses..I think, I hope. Here begins my rant.
Knowing I am about to open a gallery soon.I pay close attention to the galleries in my area. How the run, work, the artists, the curators, exhibitions and overall vibe of the place. I was really worried about how I want my space to be and run. How I want to be different.I was concerned that I was making mistakes before I've even opened. After Saturday I feel some what confident in my decisions to be different in how I will run things.Or maybe it's not me it's just this gallery and how they run things.
Here is what happened... Someone broke a part of Harvest's artwork. Her installation had a small figure that stod at the base of it and some woman came along and kicked it and broke off the head. Now accidents happen and Harvest was the first to acknowledge this was an accident (she was way more calmer then I would have ever been). Here is what made me livid though. This lady just walked away. She just turned away and shrugged it off. She damaged the work in front of the artist and the gallery owners and walked out not saying anything!! Fucking insane huh! What made things worse was that the curators or owners did NOTHING! They just let this woman walk away.I find this incredibly irresponsible and lacking any professionalism. So I did what any friend would do.I chased the woman down and yelled at her.Telling her what she did was rude and inexcusable. Her lame excuse as it wasnt her fault. That they should have taped it to the ground.I yelled at her about her obvious lack gallery etiquette. That one must be aware of their space when walking into a gallery especially when there is installation peices.I told her she was responsible and either had to pay for the damage to get fixed or pay for the piece in whole.BUT the LEAST she had to do was walk in there and apologize to the artist. Which I would not let her go till she did this. Not only was she rude to the artist. We found out she owns an antique store. So when asked if we were to go into her store and break someting what would she do?.Now i can almost understand the fear she might have had.The fact that she gets caught ruining a piece of art. Here is where my anger comes in.The gallery..They just didnt step up.First they should have never let that lady walk out they should have made sure she paid for the piece or the damage (instead they glued it back together).Every gallery should have insurance. what really erks me is their obvious lack of concern for the artist. They were just concerned about what they could and couldnt sell and since they could sell the work on the wall and maybe not the installation they piad no mind to Harvest.Funny thing is the lady who broke part of Harvests work was a relative of the other artist. When I asked the gallery owners what they would have done if someone would have bumped into the wall causeing the work from the wall to fall or break or crack, what would they have done? They would have made whomever ruined it pay for it. Well???? I have a total disrespect for this gallery now.As well as I am the one who introduced Harvest to them,so i feel like i should take some blame in there somewhere.I think the only thing that saved the weekend for Harvest was Disneyland..Any thoughts? What would you have done? I have better pictures coming soon.

you did the right thing. ugh. i actually broke a piece when i worked in a gallery - and luckily it was a former professor of mine and he was so cool about it....

that lady was so wrong not to at the VERY least acknowledge what she had done. you have to at least apologize - and if harvest is cool with it - then you can let it go..... and the fact that she owned a store just makes it worse. ALL art no matter what it's type is valuable and needs to be considered.... sigh....

you are going to run your space with such integrity. i have not one shred of doubt...

Yikes. Those kind of situations are always difficult and complicated and uncomfortable.

Hey, I'm so sorry I missed the show! I ended up moving heavy boxes right up until the moment I had to head to the west side.

I am looking forward to going to your gallery.

Good luck with the gallery. Stay positive. You're going to need it.
